Not many independent hip hop artists in Malaysia can lay claim to being able to hold it down for nearly a full decade; Samir, however, has done exactly that, and in style. Beginning in 1996, Samir was a founding member of legendary KL hip hop crew Da Joint and its extended family of affiliates, the Ruffneck Clique. From their stomping grounds of Bangsar, Samir and Da Joint brought hardcore rap fully into the Malaysian urban music consciousness, with such banging anthems as B.A.N.G.S.A.R. and Livin¡¯ In The Streets (both of which made it to #1 on Hitz.fm¡¯s Malaysian Top 10 chart). Apart from massive radio appreciation, Samir has also made his mark in numerous live performances, such as Rentak Asia, Hitz.fm 9th Birthday bash, Hitz.fm Penang Beach party, Anugerah ERA and the World Cup Finals party at B.Bintang Walk, where he rocked the mic and the crowd with equal aplomb.
He has acted as musical performer and show host for such varied clients as Petronas, Celcom, Hotlink, Bionics DJ Academy and Playaz Universe. As a recording artiste, Samir has contributed his diverse talents to a number of label projects, among them Chaos 2001 (Posse Records), Message For the Masses Vol. 1 and 2 (Gecko Records) and Broadway Entertainment. His career as a independent hip hop musician came to a head with Da Joint¡¯s EP, entitled Sound Therapy, released in 2003 under their start-up Ruff Selecta indie label.
Samir has so far released three singles on the local airwaves such as R u Ready (No.1 on Hitz.fm MET TEN Charts for 14 weeks) Lets Go (No.1 on Hitz.fm MET Ten Charts for 4 weeks) and Dikir Berbisa (No.1 on Era.fm for four weeks) and samir has also 3 nominations to date (Anugerah Era 2006, Hitz MET 10 Awards and recently Anugerah Industri Muzik) He is currently finalising he¡¯s second album entitled "undisputed" with producer Damian VE and many others!
Samir, whose influences are, varied across many musical genres (Public Enemy, Sun Valley Crew, Tupac Shakur, Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5, The Bee Gees, Lenny Kravitz) harbours dreams of seeing hip hop emerge as a viable art form in the Malaysian music industry, Not content with seeing hip hop as a trend, Samir hopes that one day hip hop musicians can stand tall and on an equal footing with artists of other genres.
